SOS Iceland is very easy to use app. First of all use it for emergency, a accident or if someone is lost. And then you can also leave your “trail” which can be used if you get lost.

SOS Iceland should not been used as the only telecommunications equipment. Based on coverage and conditions in your area it is possible that you need also sattellite phone or other equipment.  Connection for data transmission is not necessary to use the app; conventional mobile phone connection suffices. Be aware that in many rural areas as well as the highland there are none mobile coverage.

The emergency beacons

You can rent McMurdo FastFind personal locator beacons with ICE-SAR (tel:  +3545705900) which can be used to send out distress signal with your location on 406 mhz through the Cospas Sarsat system. The price for renting the beacon’s is 5 Euros pr. 24 hours or 25 Euros pr. week

Travel Plan

One of the most important things to do when preparing your travelling is to make a detailed travel plan and leave with someone who can act if needed.

ICE-SAR offers two kinds of services. Travellers reporting service  is for those who are planning bigger and more difficult tours. Travellers then visit ICE-SAR office and with a personal go through the travel plan, equipment etc. In this service ICE-SAR will check upon that the travellers will arrive at right time.

 On the other hand travellers can make their own plan in the web at savetravel.is  site . You just have to write down the most important details and send the plan to a contact. In this service ICE-SAR will NOT check upon that the travellers will arrive, that is the responsibility of the contact.
